"O" Groups
The
Orioles
Located
in Baltimore, Maryland the Orioles consisted of Sonny Til (born
Earlington Carl Tilghman), Alexander Sharp, George Nelson,
Johnny Reed and Tommy Gaither together they laid the foundation
for R&B vocal groups and Doo-Wop. Although, teenagers they
originally called themselves the Vibranaires. In 1948 "It's
Too Soon To Know" was released and became a number one
R&B hit and number 13 on the Pop charts. The following year
(1949) "Tell Me So became their second number one hit and
also charting were "A Kiss And A Rose," "I
Challenge You Kiss," "Forgive And Forget,"
"Lonely Christmas." The following year do to an
automobile accident Gaither and Nelson were replaced by Ralph
Williams and Gregory Carroll. The new Orioles had their first
hit in 1952 with "Baby Please Don't Go" the following
year (1953) the Orioles released "Crying In The Chapel
which reached number one on the R&B charts and 11 in the Pop
charts, eventually achieving gold. The Orioles disbanded
in 1954. The Orioles are considered to be the original Doo-Wop
group.
