"P" Groups
The
Penguins
The
Penguins formed in 1954 in Los Angeles, California and
considered to be one of the most memorable groups from the
1950's. The group was made up of Cleveland Duncan, Bruce Tate,
Curtis Williams, and Dexter Tisby. The Penguins got their name
from a pack of cigarettes which contain a picture of a penguin,
fist signed with DooTone Records. The first hit "Earth
Angel" reached number 1 in the US Billboard R&B chart
and also reached the Top ten. Duncan and a new formed Penguins
group still tour and perform.
The
Platters
One
of the foremost R&B vocal groups of the 1950's, they were
the first black group accepted as a major singing act and for
awhile the worlds most successful vocal group. The Platters
formed in Los Angeles in 1953 consisted of Buck Ram, Tony
Williams, David Lynch, Alex Hodge, and Herb Reed, later
replacing Hodge was Paul Robi and Zola Taylor. Their first hit
came in 1955 with "Only You" that hit the US top five.
Other extraordinary hits followed "The Great
Pretender," "My Prayer," "Twilight
Time," all reached number 1 on the US charts. These
followed with an International number 1 hit "Smoke Gets In
Your Eyes" in 1958-59. The Platters are an American legacy.
