The
Silhouettes

This
group formed in Philadelphia in 1955 and was originally known as
the Gospel Tornados. The group consisted of Billy Horton,
Raymond Edwards, Richard Lewis, and Earl Beal. "Get A Job"
recorded in 1957 by the Silhouettes, went to number one on both
the pop and rhythm & blues charts, and was the Silhouettes only
hit.
The Skyliners
The
Skyliners from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania emerging late in the
50's with a remarkable heartache ballad, "Since I Don't
Have You." It is one of the ultimate rock n' roll classics,
and it only reached number 12 in the US charts. The Skyliners
consisted of Jimmy Beaumont, Janet Vogel, Wally Lester, Joe
VerScharen, and Jackie Taylor. The also had success with
"This I Swear" in 1959 which reached number 20 on the
R&B charts. The Skyliners are a definite piece of American
music history and still perform today.
The
Spaniels
The
Spaniels formed 1952 in Gary, Indiana, are universally
recognized as one of the great R&B vocal groups of the
fifties era. The group originally consisted of James 'Pookie'
Hudson, Ernest Warren, Opal Courtney, Willis C. Jackson, and
Gerald Gregory. In 1953 "Baby It's You made the R&B Top
10. The following year the Spaniels had their biggest hit "Goodnite
Sweetheart, Goodnite" that reached US Pop top 30. "Goodnite
Sweetheart, Goodnite has since become a Doo-Wop classic. The
Spaniels in 1955 recorded two regional hit "Let's Make
Up," and "You Painted Pictures. Pookie Hudson and
Gerald Gregory reorganized the Spaniels in 1956 and the
remaining members were exchanged for James Cochran, Carl Rainge,
and Don Porter. The Spaniels remain the symbol of Doo-Wop and
are original artists of rock n' roll. The vocal sound of Pookie
Hudson remains unequaled, and it has tried to be duplicated by
various artists, to no avail. Pookie Hudson and the Spaniels
continue to tour and perform.
