"T" Groups
The
Turbans
The
Turbans always dressed in their trademark headgear, first
recorded "When You Dance" which reached number 3 on
the US R&B and number 33 on the Pop charts in 1955. The
Turbans consisted of Andrew 'Al' Banks (lead vocal), Mathew
Platt, Charles Williams, and Andrew 'Chet' Jones. "When You
Dance" has achieved a historic fascination by being one of
the first rock n' roll tunes. "Sister Sookey" recorded
in 1956 a nice follow-up to their last recording, however it
failed to chart. The Turbans never had another record which
charted. The Turbans disbanded in 1962.
The
Teenagers
The
Teenagers consisting of Frankie Lymon, Jimmy Merchant, Sherman
Garnes, Herman Santiago, and Joe Negroni formed in New York City
in 1954. Their first recording "Why Do Fools Fall In
Love" , was issued on January 1, 1956 and soared to the US
Top Ten. The song later went on to reach number one in Britain
and Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers found great acclaim in
England. On their next recording Lymon was given superior
billing doing "I Want You To Be My Girl". 1956 brought
other superb hits from the Teenagers, "I Promise To
Remember," "The ABC's Of Love," and I'm Not A
Juvenile Delinquent". In the summer of 1957, Lymon at the
age of 15 broke from the group for a solo career.
